What a good SEO audit covers

The baseline: five numbers before anything else

An SEO audit is a diagnosis of why a site earns the organic traffic it does and what would change it. Before any tool spits out 200 issues, I want five numbers: domain rating, referring domains, keywords ranking, current organic traffic, and traffic value. One client engagement started with the Ahrefs screenshot reading DR 11, 3 referring domains, 0 keywords. That screenshot is the audit's spine, because it says which class of problem you have: authority, content, or technical.

When I evaluate domains I also look at the shape of the link profile, referring domains to IPs close to 1:1, anchors that look human, growth that looks organic. A pretty DR built on a private blog network shows up in those ratios, and I know because I have built both kinds.

What most audits miss: the silent debts

Tool-generated audits list what a crawler can see. The expensive problems are the ones it cannot. Auditing one client's content system I found 51 percent of assigned keywords had never been verified against a live page, over two thousand silent gaps between what the plan claimed and what the site did. On another, whole clusters averaged 0.00 editorial links per page, pages publishing into a vacuum with no internal path to or from them. Neither shows up in a Screaming Frog export, both were the actual reason performance had flatlined.

The other half of a modern audit is where everyone else is wrong. Most of the industry is doing SEO wrong right now, in a specific way: publishing comprehensive anonymous content into a search landscape that has stopped rewarding it, which is what the AI-search traffic numbers demonstrate at scale. So the audit must include an AI baseline: run your buyer queries through the assistants and log who gets cited, per the GEO measurement panel. An audit that prices a fix without that baseline is a sales document. What happens after the audit is the full service scope, the spend conversation is on the cost page, and who should run it is on agency vs consultant.

A good audit ends with an ordered list, not a score: the five things to fix first, each with the traffic value it unblocks. If the deliverable cannot be sorted by value, it was a crawl report. The best audits also make one uncomfortable claim about your stage or strategy that the tools could never have produced, which is how you know a person did the thinking.

FAQ

What does an SEO audit include?

A baseline of authority, rankings and traffic value, a link-profile quality read, technical crawl checks, a content-to-keyword verification pass, an internal-link map, and in 2026 an AI-citation baseline across your buyer queries.

How long does an SEO audit take?

A meaningful one takes one to two weeks: the crawl is hours, but verifying content against the plan and baselining AI citations is manual work. Same-day audits are tool exports with a logo.

How much does an SEO audit cost?

From free, as a sales document, to several thousand dollars for genuine diagnosis. The free ones are priced accurately. Judge any audit by whether it found something a crawler could not have.
