What stays the same
Answer engine optimization is optimising to be the answer an AI engine gives, rather than a result a person clicks. Most of it is SEO done properly: crawlable site, topical authority, real expertise. The investment logic holds too. SEO is the ETF of growth channels, slow, compounding, and the biggest payoff over the long run, where paid media is day trading: growth stops the moment you stop feeding it. AEO inherits that curve, with an earlier leading indicator, because citations move before rankings do.
What success looks like changes, though. It is not organic rank. It is AI engines citing and recommending you on the specific topics you have chosen, which is the reframe covered in depth on the GEO page. The other thing that carries over untouched is editorial standard. An answer engine quoting you is staking its credibility on your accuracy, so pages with checkable claims, named authors and honest caveats win twice: once with readers, once with the machines trained on reader behaviour. Nothing about the AI layer rewards content you would be embarrassed to sign.
What changes: prompts, shape, and seeding
Three practical differences. First, the query set: the prompts that matter are category prompts, best tool for X, and comparison prompts, alternatives to the incumbent. Those are the questions buyers actually ask assistants, and they are where a challenger can outrank an incumbent in an answer years before outranking them in Google. Second, page shape: answer-shaped, schema-marked pages that a model can lift whole, definitional statement first, judgment second, evidence third. Third, seeding: the engines weight third-party corroboration, so the plan includes placing your experts and your claims in the communities and publications the models already read.
My standing three-move version for clients: answer-shaped pages on the high-value topics, legitimate seeding of the same claims where the engines look, and a monthly citation panel to prove movement, the measurement discipline from GEO. The prompt-tracing method behind move two is on the ChatGPT page, the Google-side mechanics on the AI Overviews page, and the on-site foundations in what SEO services should include. If you are sizing the stakes first, start with how much traffic AI search is actually moving.
Start this quarter, not next year. The citation panels are cheap, the pages are work you should be doing anyway, and every month of delay is a month a competitor's name gets trained into the answers instead of yours.
FAQ
What is answer engine optimization?
Optimising to be the answer AI engines give: cited in AI Overviews, recommended by ChatGPT and Perplexity on your category prompts. Roughly three quarters of the work is classic SEO. The rest is answer-shaped pages, category-prompt targeting and third-party seeding.
Is AEO different from GEO?
They are near-synonyms with different emphases. GEO covers the whole practice of being cited by generative engines. AEO emphasises the answer-shaped page and prompt-level targeting. In practice one plan covers both.
Which prompts matter most for AEO?
Category prompts, like best tool for a job, and comparison prompts, like alternatives to the incumbent. They carry purchase intent, and a challenger can win them in AI answers long before winning the equivalent Google SERP.
